RODINA – Groupe de danse bulgare au Canada is a Canadian nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to preserving, promoting and celebrating Bulgarian cultural heritage.
The Rodina ensemble first operated under the organizational and corporate umbrella of the National Capital Region Bulgarian Community, an Ottawa–Gatineau nonprofit serving the local Bulgarian community. It later became an independent nonprofit organization incorporated in Quebec. Today, Rodina brings together members of the Bulgarian-Canadian community through traditional folk dance, music, public performance and community participation.
What our name means
ro-DEE-na · noun
Homeland—the country of one's birth or ancestors; the place where belonging begins.
There is a small miracle in the word rodina. A homeland sounds as though it ought to stay obediently on a map, yet anyone who has crossed an ocean knows better. It travels—in a remembered melody, in a joke that needs no translation, in the sure step with which one dancer finds the hand of another.
Aleko Konstantinov went to Chicago and back, looking at the wide world with curiosity and at his own people with an affectionate, discerning smile. Rodina's journey has also crossed the Atlantic, but it has not simply gone there and back. Its members brought a common inheritance from Bulgaria and, here beside the Ottawa River, made from it a community: Bulgarian in memory and spirit, Canadian in its daily life and future. Thus Bulgaria remains the beloved rodina where the story began, while Rodina in Canada becomes something equally precious—the place where belonging continues.
Written in the spirit of Aleko Konstantinov's warm-eyed, light-footed travel writing.

A shared Ottawa–Gatineau history
Rodina first took shape in 2000 with the support of the National Capital Region Bulgarian Community, which provided rehearsal space and financial support from the City of Gatineau.
The ensemble later became a separate Quebec nonprofit. That later chapter does not erase the common beginning: years of rehearsals, celebrations and public stages helped Bulgarian culture find a lasting home in Ottawa–Gatineau.
Today, Rodina carries that artistic tradition forward in its own right through dance, song, public performance and participation in the wider cultural life of Canada.
At home in the National Capital Region
Parliament rises across the Ottawa River behind Rodina's Bulgarian costumes—a meeting of two landscapes that says, without translation, where the ensemble belongs today.
Bulgaria remains the heritage carried in every song and step; Ottawa–Gatineau is the community in which that heritage keeps growing, gathering people and becoming part of Canada's public life.
